What possibly could be better than reading a deeply engrossing book by a great author? How about enjoying the author presenting his or her work and personal life stories in person in the company of other book-loving Minnesotans? If this sounds too good to be true, let us introduce you to the PenPals series, which premiered in 1997 and is the longest-running author lecture series in the Twin Cities. PenPals features two presentations by each visiting author and boasts more than 850 loyal subscribers.

Standard Heating and Air Conditioning is an enthusiastic supporter, with all PenPals series proceeds benefitting the Hennepin County Library system. We also proudly support Minnesota Public Radio, which hosts a similar program called “Speaking Volumes.”

Upcoming 2015 PenPals events include:

March 12 at 7:30 p.m. and March 13 @ 11 a.m.

Richard Blanco is an American poet, public speaker, author, and civil engineer. He is the fifth poet to read at a United States presidential inauguration, having read for Barack Obama’s second inauguration.

April 16 @ 7:30 p.m. and April 17 @ 11 a.m.

Jodi Picoult is an American author. She was awarded the New England Bookseller Award for fiction in 2003. Picoult currently has approximately 14 million copies of her books in print worldwide.

May 7 at 7:30 p.m. and May 8 @ 11 a.m.

Chip Kidd is an American author, editor, and graphic designer, best known for his book covers.

All PenPal events are presented at the Hopkins Center for the Arts (1111 Main Street, Hopkins) and include free parking. A pre-show reception is held before each performance with complimentary dessert and coffee, music, and book sales. A book signing is open to all ticket holders after each daytime performance. Past presenters have included New York Times best-selling author Joyce Carol Oates and Pulitzer Prize winner Doris Kearns Goodwin. Subscriptions range from $128 to $200 a season.
