The Secret to Avoiding Repairs? Routine Care.
Your HVAC Upgrade Cheat Sheet
- Wi-Fi-enabled thermostats help you monitor and adjust AC while away from home.
- Electronic air cleaners capture airborne allergens or pollutants as they pass through the HVAC system for cleaner indoor air.
- High-efficiency AC and heat pump systems are a flexible, energy-efficient fix for parts of a home that are hard to heat, cool, or dehumidify.
- Ductless mini splits provide cooling and heating and are great for four-season porches, garages, and boiler-heated homes.
Expert Tips for an Energy-Efficient Summer
Your HVAC system is like your car—it keeps things moving and comfortable. And just like your car, it needs regular tune-ups to help it do its job efficiently. It starts with the condenser—the engine that drives the cooling process. If it isn’t running smoothly, it can lead to inadequate cooling, increased energy use, and added strain on the entire system. A brief annual check-up can ensure that your system is ready to keep your home comfy all summer long.
Three Ways to Keep Your AC Humming
- Keep your condenser clean. Brush away leaves, branches, or dirt on or around the unit, and keep shrubs and plants at least 12 inches away to maximize airflow.
- Clean or check your filters once a month per inch of thickness. For example: 1-inch filters should be checked monthly, and 4-inch filters every four months to ensure they are clean and functioning well. If not, replace them.
- Avoid closing all basement vents to push cool air upstairs. HVAC systems are designed for airflow and restricting that flow can stress the system and reduce its efficiency and longevity.
